Bryan (Executive Platinum / oneworld Emerald) and Tyler (Platinum Pro / oneworld Sapphire) both get complimentary same-day access here since AA82 is an international departure — each can bring one guest, so Bryan brings Patricia and Tyler brings Carol. No tickets or day passes to buy, and no security re-clear needed since you're already airside after landing on AA374.

Above Gate 12, post-security, open 4:15 AM–1:15 AM. This is American's Flagship-tier lounge at JFK, recently rebranded to "Greenwich" as part of the Terminal 8 buildout shared with British Airways.

• What it's like: hot buffet (shrimp, chicken, salmon), a "Tasting Room" with made-to-order items like bratwurst and truffle fries, a full bar, a quiet room, work pods, and window seating with runway views.
• Showers: available by signing in at the front desk (~30 minute slots) — worth using before the overnight flight.
• Reviews: rated well in third-party lounge guides (roughly 8/10 across food, cleanliness, and design); can get busy at peak times.

⚠ Bryan can get into a nicer lounge alone — Tyler can't: Terminal 8 also has a SoHo Lounge, reserved for oneworld Emerald (Bryan's Executive Platinum tier) on any oneworld flight — bigger and brighter than Greenwich by most reviews, with floor-to-ceiling tarmac views, a hybrid buffet plus à la carte menu, and showers. Tyler's Platinum Pro is oneworld Sapphire, which SoHo does not accept regardless of route — travelers holding Sapphire have reportedly been turned away at the door. There's also a Chelsea Lounge, but that's Concierge Key / Flagship First only — neither of you qualifies. Bryan could bring one guest into SoHo (Patricia, say), but that splits the group of four across two lounges for the whole layover.

Recommendation: stay together at Greenwich, which both of your statuses access as a group of four with no day pass. Treat SoHo as a "next trip without the moms" idea, not something worth splitting up over on this one.

Alternative: the standard Admirals Club (Concourse C, 3rd floor, across from Gate 42) is also available to both of you, but has simpler self-service food and no showers — Greenwich is the better fit for a 6h45m layover with two moms who tire easily.

Lunch happens wherever/whenever you hop off; no reservation planned for today.

Regular taxi from The Caledonian — tell the driver "Castle Esplanade" (Castle Hill, the top/final stretch of the Royal Mile), not just "Edinburgh Castle." At the traffic block, staff in high-vis vests will ask for tickets; tell them you need the "mobility drop-off" and the taxi will be waved through onto the Esplanade itself, right at the entrance. Royal Mile walk to lunch

Downhill from the Castle Esplanade toward Luckenbooths, further down High Street. Street performers, galleries, shops, historic closes. Carol can photograph architecture and scenery. Early September still catches the tail end of the Fringe, so expect crowds and slower going; most of High Street is pedestrianized, so a taxi for any of this stretch can only pick up at a cross-street, not on the Royal Mile itself.

Optional stop — St Giles' Cathedral: right on this route, free or small donation. Treat it as optional and skip it without a second thought if time or energy is short; the plan works fine without it.

Lunch — Luckenbooths

Confirmed. A relaxed, unhurried lunch well down the Royal Mile — the rest stop before the short walk to Holyroodhouse.

Walk to the Palace of Holyroodhouse

Short walk from Luckenbooths to the bottom of the Royal Mile, arriving by 3:30 PM — Headout asks guests to arrive 30 minutes before the 4:00 PM start time. This is a hard deadline (see the Confirmed card below), so if the group is running behind, taxi the rest of the way rather than risk it.

Palace of Holyroodhouse — Entry & Private Guided Tour

Arrive 3:30 PM; entry and the private guided tour of Queen Elizabeth II's Private Apartments start at 4:00 PM. Abbey ruins outside are excellent for Carol's photography. The Palace closes at 6:00 PM, so this fills the rest of the afternoon — no other stops scheduled after this.

Return to hotel

Taxi recommended — it's the end of a full day and the Palace closes right at 6:00 PM.

Dinner — TBD

Left open on purpose. The plan is to decide Monday evening based on how everyone's feeling after a full day — not the hotel restaurant by default, and not skipping dinner either. If there's energy to go back out, Gillian's Monday-dinner picks (Monteiths or Wedgewood, both on the Royal Mile) are options to consider, not a booked plan.

Board the Hop-On Hop-Off — Regal Tour (Blue Line)

Board at Waterloo Place (Stop ZG) and ride the first half of the loop out to the Ocean Terminal / Royal Yacht Britannia stop — this replaces the taxi/bus leg originally planned, and works out well since Edinburgh Trams remain out of service to Ocean Terminal. Royal Yacht Britannia self-guided audio tour

Five decks, fully accessible via lift. The former Royal residence — the moms will see the Queen's bedrooms, state rooms, and kitchens. ~1.75 hours. Photography allowed.

Royal Deck Tea Room

Casual tearoom on the Verandah Deck — speciality teas and coffees, soups, sandwiches, and cakes/scones, overlooking the Firth of Forth. Not a formal tiered afternoon tea service; set expectations accordingly.

Reboard the Regal Tour bus — ride the second half back

Catch the bus at the Ocean Terminal stop and ride the rest of the loop back to Waterloo Place, taking in the stops not seen on the way out (see the stop list above), then a short walk or taxi the rest of the way to the hotel.

Dinner — Rhubarb Restaurant, Prestonfield House

Confirmed. Fine dining in a theatrical 17th-century country house setting, smart/casual dress. Requires a taxi (~7 min, ~$26–32 each way from The Caledonian) — it's in a residential area outside the Old Town.

Head back & retire early

Wednesday is a travel day; the moms need rest.

Breakfast at The Caledonian

Keep this leisurely — eat, have coffee, use the bathroom, and start the day without a rush. Don't move breakfast earlier just to create more sightseeing time.

Check out and load the car

Make 9:30 the practical "out the door" target. Once the luggage is loaded, you're done with the hotel.

Drive to Edinburgh Airport

Allow the full half-hour rather than planning around a best-case drive.

Get the car, settle everyone, load navigation, and go — don't turn the airport pickup into a sightseeing stop. Between the counter transaction and the drive, arrival in Aberfoyle may land closer to 11:15–11:30 AM; the rest of the morning has enough flexibility to absorb that.

Arrival and parking

Use the Aberfoyle Riverside Car Park — park once and explore the village on foot. First stop: bathrooms. Everyone has just spent time in the car and is about to walk.

Aberfoyle village

Keep it to roughly 60–75 minutes rather than a two-hour shopping expedition. Simple route: Riverside Car Park → Main Street → browse a few shops/galleries → photos. Good optional coffee/sweet stop: The Station Coffee Shop. The Scottish Wool Centre is the obvious Scottish-shopping stop. No Doon Hill, forest hike, or trail today.

Lunch in Aberfoyle

The purpose is to break the walking with a substantial sitting period. Keep it comfortable rather than a long multi-course event.

Back to the car

No sightseeing obligation. Bathroom if needed, then go.

Loch Ard scenic drive

Use the B829 toward Kinlochard/Loch Ard and treat the drive itself as the experience. One short get-out-of-the-car stop — about 10–15 minutes for photos, stretching, and a look at the loch — at a safe, established pull-off. Not a hiking afternoon; skip the Three Lochs Forest Drive today, since Thursday's Trossachs day already covers similar ground.

Return toward Callander

Rest — everyone sits. No additional viewpoint hunting.

Hotel reset

This is not dead time — it's what makes the rest of the trip sustainable. Shower, nap, feet up, tea/drink, unpack, read, or simply do nothing. Don't schedule another attraction.

Dinner at The Lade Inn, or an easy night in

A relaxed pub dinner keeps the evening simple — but it's a busy day and the moms may be tired, so treat this as an option rather than a commitment. Then return to Thackray House. Wednesday is done.

Keep it leisurely; there's no reason to create an early alarm.

Jackets, trekking poles, water, sunglasses, and any small snack.

Depart hotel for Loch Katrine

The drive is scenic, but the boat departure is the immovable anchor — don't stop for every pretty view along the way.

Arrive Trossachs Pier

Park at the pier rather than hunting for roadside parking. Use the bathrooms, then collect boarding passes from the Booking Office before getting in line — the tickets are not scan-and-board. Get oriented and board without rushing.

Sir Walter Scott steamship cruise

A 1.5–2 hour scenic cruise on the historic 1900 steamship. Fully accessible, wheelchair-friendly, indoor and outdoor seating. Start seated/under cover, step outside periodically for photographs, then sit again — nobody needs to stand on deck the whole way. Live captain commentary covers Rob Roy MacGregor legends, Outlander filming locations, osprey sightings, and Highland history.

On-board amenities: a licensed bar with light refreshments and snacks (coffee, tea, soft drinks, whisky specials). No substantial meals on board.

Disembark

Don't schedule lunch at exactly noon — the cruise is allowed to finish anywhere in that window.

Let the drive be a rest period

Don't add a chain of photo stops. If you chose Stronachlachar, enjoy the lochside setting, then drive back. If you chose Trossachs Pier, head directly home after lunch.

Flexible afternoon in Callander

Deliberately open. If tired: return to Thackray House, nap, shower, put feet up, or have a drink. If everyone feels good: a short 20–30 minute Callander walk or browse shops for up to about 45 minutes. Don't turn this into another attraction.

Breakfast, pack, checkout at Thackray House

No need for an early departure. Use the morning for a leisurely breakfast, packing, bathroom, and a final check of the room. The 11:00 AM departure is intentionally late enough to make this a calm final Highlands morning.

Depart Callander north on the A84

Genuinely new territory north of Callander.

Strathyre / Loch Lubnaig stop

A scheduled stop, not a vague "photo stop." Drive through Strathyre and continue along the A84 beside Loch Lubnaig. Look for a safe, established pull-off with a view of the loch and get everyone out for about 10–15 minutes: lake view → photographs → stretch → sit if possible → back in the car. Not a hike — the beauty is the road-and-loch experience.

Drive to Killin

Rest — everyone sits while the scenery continues outside the windows. Route via Lochearnhead toward Killin.

Killin + Falls of Dochart

The main Friday Highlands stop. Park in Killin and use the Falls of Dochart Inn / village-side area as the practical base for viewing the falls. The falls are a roadside/bridge-side viewing experience — the bridge is narrow with no pavement, so view from the safe side rather than walking across it. Take photographs, sit for a few minutes if possible, and enjoy the village atmosphere.

Drive south toward South Queensferry

Rest — the longest sitting block of the day, and a useful one. Drive south via the Stirling/M9 corridor. The extra hour built into Friday is what keeps this comfortable, without forcing a 6:00-ish hotel arrival.

Parking + orient

Park in a public car park rather than hunting for a street space, then walk only the short section you actually want to see. If parking near the village is crowded, don't circle repeatedly — use a designated public lot and adapt the walking route.

Forth Bridges viewpoint + short village wander

Go directly to the Forth Bridges viewpoint area for the iconic view of the Forth Bridge, Forth Road Bridge, and Queensferry Crossing. Then wander only a short, flat section of the historic waterfront/main street, with a sit-down break built in. A photography-and-atmosphere stop, not a walking tour — if anyone's tired, skip the wandering and go straight to the restaurant.

Transition to dinner

Bathroom, sit down, and get ready for the final meal.

Early dinner in South Queensferry

The celebratory farewell to the Highlands portion of the trip. Best style: somewhere comfortable with, ideally, a memorable Forth view. Reserve once the choice is locked in — none of the above are booked yet.

Drive to Edinburgh Airport hotel

Rest — one final easy drive. Target arrival about 6:45–7:00 PM, with 7:00 PM completely acceptable. Once at the hotel, the Highlands portion is over — no more sightseeing.

Wake, final packing, checkout

Pack any remaining items. Early checkout from the Edinburgh Airport hotel. The hotel may allow a late checkout if arranged in advance — ask upon arrival Friday.

The hotel is ~10 minutes from Edinburgh Airport. Allow extra time for the car return, parking, and security.

Arrive airport, car return, check-in

Return the rental car to the Car Rental Centre, Edinburgh Airport (Avis Reservation #23425497US4 — drop-off confirmed for 8:30 AM). Check bags. Proceed through security.

Both Bryan's and Tyler's oneworld status (Emerald/Sapphire) are recognized here for a sit-down breakfast before the long flight home — each can bring a guest, covering all four of you. Open 5:00 AM–8:30 PM, explicitly recognizes oneworld Emerald and Sapphire status flying any oneworld carrier, American included. Hot/cold buffet, self-service bar, business area, WiFi; no showers. Rated around 4.1/5 in lounge guides. Better than the gate area for the moms to sit and rest before boarding.
